More than 250 special education athletes will participate in Clover Park School District’s (CPSD) Track Stars Invitational Wednesday, June 1 at Harry Lang Stadium (6015 111th St SW in Lakewood) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“This is a great celebration of what students with disabilities can do,” said director of special education Sean Whalen. “Our culture puts a lot of focus on the limitations of people, not what they are able to do. Our mission in special education is to expand the horizons for our students, to make their world as big as possible. This event showcases our efforts to do that. From designing the event logo to training for the events to this public performance, this is about what our students are able to do.”
The meet features running, wheelchair racing and softball throwing events. Two new events, bowling and dance, were added this year. A number of community and military volunteers help students complete the events. The district has held the Track Stars event since 2007.
